The story earns New Capability because Albertsons genuinely could not do cross-banner identity before: shoppers had separate accounts at Safeway and Jewel-Osco with no way to merge preferences or loyalty data. The just-in-time migration detail is concrete and credible, showing how they solved the hardest technical problem rather than glossing over it. The piece also has a clear Efficiency thread in reduced cost of ownership and eliminated duplicate maintenance, but the headline capability of a single unified customer record across acquisitions is the lead.
The just-in-time migration technique, running code on both legacy and new systems simultaneously and migrating customers as they sign in, is a specific mechanism worth naming in any case study about complex data migrations.
