The before-state is concrete and specific: one production incident per week on a single workflow, with engineers too scared to change the code. The story earns its Turnaround tag by showing that a broken situation was reversed, not just optimized. The secondary New Capability thread is credible because GPU-routed machine learning workflows and composable orchestration were genuinely impractical in the prior architecture.
Quantify fear, not just downtime. Saying 'we were afraid of doing any changes in that code path' turns a technical reliability problem into a human one, making the before-state visceral for any engineering reader.
